Set targets instead of goals

Goals are things you can achieve and are therefore finite in principle .
A target is something you really aim at, think of a game of darts.
The danger of setting goals is that when you reach them, you stop doing all the actions that brought you to that goal. A target remains a target.
So set some targets and do this according to the tips below.

Describe clearly what your target is.
Be specific! What do you want to achieve? Why? How do you think this will work? Remember ‘lose 10 kg’ is not a goal.
Formulate rather: feeling fit again, not being exhausted from climbing stairs, being relieved of the sugar dips that I get by eating a biscuit or candy every hour, …

  1. Come back to your values 

What kind of person do you want to be? How do you want people to describe you? What do you want to be said about you at your funeral? Caring, respectful,…? 

  1. Determine action(s) you can do NOW

Caring and respectful as value. Eg: today I brush the dog extra well, I bathe him / her (carefully).

  1. Set short-term targets

Ex: you want to be a caring partner. ‘Tonight I’m preparing breakfast for tomorrow morning for both myself and my partner.

  1. Set medium-term targets
  2. Set long-term targets
  3. Dead persons ‘targets’

Don’t set “goals” that a dead person could do better. “I’m going to stop eating chocolate.” Any goal that is about NOT doing something or stopping doing something is a dead persons goal. Make it a good goal by asking yourself, “What would I do with the time I get in the place?” Ex: if I no longer eat chips in the couch in the evening, I could talk to my best friend on the phone.
